Vietnam features as part of the publication’s Southeast Asia recommendation, alongside Cambodia and Laos. The region is described as offering exceptional cuisine, welcoming people and diverse landscapes. For Vietnam in particular, the article highlights its historic architecture, renowned coffee culture, varied scenery and rich history as reasons to explore the country.

The publication also recommends combining cultural exploration with journeys along the region’s waterways. Travel advisor Marni Granston suggests spending three to four days cruising the Mekong River, allowing travellers to experience rural villages, local markets and everyday culture. A cruise in Ha Long Bay is also recommended, offering views of Vietnam’s iconic limestone formations.

The recommendation reflects a broader shift in travel preferences among mature travellers. According to Travel+Leisure’s travel experts, people in their 50s are increasingly interested in travelling with greater purpose, seeking deeper experiences rather than simply visiting a large number of destinations. Multi-generational trips, educational experiences, wellness and comfortable travel are also emerging as important considerations.

For Vietnam, this positioning brings together several of the country’s key tourism strengths: heritage and history, distinctive cuisine and coffee, diverse natural landscapes, river and coastal experiences, and opportunities for meaningful cultural encounters. From the Mekong Delta to Ha Long Bay, Vietnam offers travellers the chance to combine relaxation with discovery and cultural immersion.
